初夏、両足院の庭園は年間を通じ最も華やかな時期を迎えます。池のほとりに群生する“半夏生 (はんげしょう)”の葉の一部が白くなり、まるで天に向かって開花するかのような幻想的な風景 に変化します。この美しい夏の始まりに合わせ、6月1日から世界的に活躍する藍師・染師 BUAISOUを迎え、展覧会「縄夏生」を開催いたします。
“半夏生”は雑節のひとつでもあり、これは夏至から数え11日目(今年は7月1日)のことを指してい ます。古より農家にとっては畑仕事の重要な節目として、一年で最も多忙な時期とされてきました。 徳島県にあるBUAISOUの藍畑もまさにこの頃、藍の葉が育成期を迎え、日ごとに力強く、そして 深みを増した蒼を蓄えていきます。
本展覧会では、藍染という日本古来の技術にBUAISOUが新たな感性を吹き込んだ掛け軸や襖絵、 暖簾など約15点の作品を展示します。いずれも伝統技法のひとつである型染めにより“縄”の紋様が 多様に表現された展示となっています。 “縄”は人類最古の造形といわれ、作品には縄目紋様がま るで藍地に施された化粧のごとく、白く浮かび上がります。そもそも半夏生という植物が白く変化 する様子は古くは「半化粧」と呼ばれ、やがて「半夏生」へと変化したと伝えられています。展示 の舞台となる書院の前庭には、ちょうど白く色づいた半夏生が見ごろを迎え、作品と庭園の景色が 呼応し合う情緒的な時空間が広がるでしょう。
京都府の名勝庭園に指定されている池泉回遊式庭園にある茶室「臨池亭」では、展覧会のテーマに 即した茶会や呈茶も企画しています。茶室には藍で染め上げた特製の畳を設え、日々の暮らしに寄 り添う用の美と現代的なクリエーション──相反する要素が交差する空間を演出します。藍と茶が 織りなす空気を感じながら、みなさまご自身の物語とも向き合う静かなひとときをお過ごしいただ けましたら幸いです。

茶会・呈茶
庭園内にある大村梅軒好みの茶室「臨池亭」におきまして少人数での茶会、および呈茶を開催いたしま す。通常は一般非公開の茶室にて BUAISOUによる特別な設えの中、作品をご鑑賞いただきながらの一服 (抹茶とお菓子)を楽しんでいただけます。

BUAISOU
2015年、BUAISOU代表 であり染師・藍師の楮覚郎 (かじ かくお)が阿波藍の産地として知られ る徳島県上板町の地域おこし協力隊を経て、メンバーと共に起業。原料となる藍の栽培をはじめ、 蒅(すくも)造り、染色、デザイン、製作まで昔から分業制であった藍染業を一貫して行い、藍染 のオリジナル商品の製作、コラボレーション、国内外での展示やワークショップなどにも取り組み、 これまで様々な手法で天然藍の魅力を伝えてきました。蒅と木灰汁(あく)、ふすま、貝灰のみで 発酵させた藍液で染めた藍は、深く美しい発色と高い堅牢度が特徴で、2018年には当初からの夢で あった、糸をひと綛ひと綛、手で染めた藍染めのジーンズも完成。今後は、棉栽培や製織、古いミ シンをメンテナンスしながら、ジーンズの製造も目指しています。2022年には香港のアートセン ターCHAT(Centre for Heritage, Arts and Textile)にて館⻑の高橋瑞木、テキスタイルデザイナー の須藤玲子キュレーションにより個展を開催しました。

両足院
両足院は1358年、龍山徳見(りゅうざんとっけん・1284〜1358年)禅師の入寂に際し、彼の弟子たち が開創しました。龍山禅師は若い時分から漢詩文の才覚に⻑け、中国・寧波へ単身留学、通算40年 にわたり各地を遍歴ののち、中国で途絶えそうになっていた臨済宗⻩龍派を再興しました。室町幕 府を創設した足利尊氏・直義兄弟の招きにより日本へ帰国、京都で建仁寺、南禅寺、天⻯寺の住持 になり、その後、室町時代を通じて隆盛を極める「五山文学」最高峰の寺院としての礎を築きまし た。
江戶時代に入ると10世の雲外東竺(うんがいとうちく)など当院の住持が、五山の中で学徳抜群の 高僧に与えられ最高の名誉とされる「碩学禄」を授与され、学術界の中核を担いました。現在重要 文化財に指定されている画僧、伝如拙による《三教図》をはじめとする漢画(唐絵)のコレクショ ンにかけては当時から有数のものがあり、室町から江戶時代にかけて⻑谷川等伯、伊藤若冲など美 術界の重鎮や上田秋成など文壇の才人たちがよく出入りしていました。陶芸で知られる五条坂もほ ど近く、保存されている日記にはそうした書画や禅にまつわる典籍と陶磁器の貸し借りをしていた という記述もあり、古くから美術、工芸、文学など多分野にわたる文化交流のサロン的な役割も 担っていたようです。
年に数回ある特別拝観の機会には両足院にゆかりのある絵師、等伯や若冲らの美術品を公開展示す るほか、近年では当院から着想を得て制作を行った国内外の現代美術家による展覧会も多く開催し ています。主な企画はミヒャエル・ボレマンス(2014年)や杉本博司(2021年)、エリザベス・ペ イトン(2024年)が手がけた掛け軸や襖絵などの展示や、庭園も含めたランドスケープ全体でイン スタレーションを行ったボスコ・ソディと加藤泉による二人展(2024年)ほか。建築や工芸、デザ イン、ファッションも含めジャンルは多岐にわたり、常に時代と呼応する新しい禅のあり方を模索 するプログラムが開催されています。

Nawagesho: Exhibition by BUAISOU
In early summer, the garden of Ryosokuin reaches its most vibrant and enchanting state of the year. Around the pond, bunches of hangesho (Saururus chinensis) reveal their distinctive transformation̶ the upper parts of their leaves turning white like flower petals̶creating a dreamlike scene, as if the plants themselves are blooming upward toward the sky. To mark this beautiful beginning of summer, Ryosokuin is delighted to present the exhibition “Nawagesho” starting on June 1, organizing with the internationally renowned indigo farmers and dyers, BUAISOU.
Hangesho also refers to a seasonal division in the traditional Japanese calendar, occurring on the eleventh day after the summer solstice (July 1 this year). This period has long been considered the busiest time for farmers. Around the same period, the indigo fields of BUAISOU in Tokushima Prefecture reach a critical stage as the indigo leaves enter their peak growing season, becoming deeper and richer in blue day by day.
The exhibition will feature approximately 15 artworks, including hanging scrolls, sliding door (Fusuma) artworks, and Noren curtains̶each embodying a new sensibility into traditional Japanese indigo dyeing by BUAISOU. The pieces prominently feature the “rope” motif expressed through the traditional katazome stencil dyeing technique. Rope is said to be one of humanityʼs oldest forms of creation. Here, its patterns emerge in striking white against deep indigo backgrounds, resembling cosmetic adornments. Notably, the plant hangesho was once called “hankesho” (half makeup) for its white-tipped leaves, a term that eventually evolved into its current name. The front garden of the Shoin Hall, where the exhibition will be staged, will also be in the peak with hangesho ̶creating a poetic dialogue between the artworks and the natural landscape.
For the duration of exhibition, visitors could experience tea ceremony and tea services at Rinchitei, the tearoom situated within the strolling pond garden designated as a Scenic Spot by Kyoto Prefecture. BUAISOU will be installing some special tatami mat dyed in indigo in the tearoom, crafting a unique space where the beauty of everyday function meets contemporary creation̶a fusion of seemingly contrasting elements. where indigo and tea weave together a tranquil atmosphere, encouraging personal reflection and storytelling.

Tea Ceremony・Matcha Serving
A small-group tea gathering and tea service will be held in ‘Rinchitei,’ a teahouse within the garden designed in the preferred style of Omura Baiken. Normally closed to the public, this special event allows guests to enjoy a bowl of matcha and some sweets while viewing artworks in a uniquely arranged setting curated by BUAISOU.
