Since the beginning of this year, we have been welcoming an increasing number of younger visitors, including people in their twenties and students. In today’s fast-paced world, filled with an overwhelming amount of information and choices, we often see people visiting our temple wishing to simply pause and spend quiet time with themselves.
To help those living in this modern era find peace of mind with ease, we would like to introduce two of our most popular experiences.
1. “Yuwaimamori” — Centering your mind and tying your wishes into an amulet
From amulet pouches adorned with delicate lace and embroidery, you can choose the one that resonates with you most.
Taking a deep breath, write your wish and name on traditional Japanese washi paper. Enclose it with a pinch of purifying zuko (aromatic powder incense) to calm the mind, and tie the cord with your own hands.
Rather than simply receiving an amulet, dedicating your full attention and senses to crafting it becomes a meaningful moment of self-reflection.
Reception: No reservation required (Available anytime at the Sutra Copying Hall, 9:30 – 16:00)
Fee: 3,000 JPY
2. “Self-Zazen” — Listening to your own breath
This is a unique style of Zazen (Zen meditation) where you immerse yourself in silence at your own pace following written guidance, without formal instruction or spoken words.
Setting aside your smartphone, you will slowly walk, sit, and tune in to the sound of the wind and the subtle presence of the garden.
Free from external judgment, you can experience a digital detox that allows you to return to your authentic self.
While preserving our tradition and tranquil atmosphere, we aspire to be a sanctuary that gently supports the hearts of people living in the present day.
When visiting Gion, Kyoto, please feel free to stop by and experience this serene stillness.
Kyoto’s summer days continue to bring intense heat. Take a moment to step away from the strong sunlight and high temperatures, and enjoy a deep, relaxing breath in a serene atmosphere.
To ensure a comfortable and restorative experience for all our guests, Ryosokuin Temple has equipped its main experience spaces with air conditioning.
Surrounded by a refreshing coolness, we invite you to take time to gently connect with your mind and body through our offered experiences. We look forward to welcoming you.
